In yet another bid to combat air pollution, the BJP-led municipal corporations in Delhi have now planned to set-up cycle stands across the city. The move has been announced right before the 2017 municipal polls.

These docks are expected to generate revenue for the cash-strapped civic agencies. The 25x8 ft stands can house 10 cycles each. The north corporation will be establishing 25 such docks in institutional areas, including Delhi University, ISBT Kashmere Gate and Civil Lines.

“The docks will be given out on a lease. The allocation will be for a duration of 10 years, and 20x8 feet space will be allotted for advertisements,”said north civic body Commissioner Praveen Gupta. He added that the scheme was meant to promote eco friendly transport in these areas, so that a large number of people could cycle to work or to classes.

The docks will also come up in GTB Nagar, Kingsway Camp, Ambedkar University, Rohini Sector 7 and Mukherjee Nagar. “Anyone will be able to gain membership by submitting a nominal fee and an identity card. Once verified, the users will be given a card using which they can pick a cycle. These stations will also give users the flexibility of returning the cycle at any of the docks,”Gupta added.

Welcoming the move, Ayush Khanna of the Delhi Cycling Club said, “It is a good initiative. Students will be benefitted the most. We need these kind of measures, especially when the air pollution levels have crossed breathable limits.” Meanwhile, the east and south corporations are also planning similar cycling docks. “Initially, we have planned to establish stands in Hauz Khas, Saket, Munirka and Vasant Vihar, as these places are a hub for students and working professionals. The project, however, is still in the planning stage. The bicycles will have GPS chips so that they are not stolen,”said a senior south corporation official.

The corporations further plan to launch a mobile app for the scheme, so that users can book a cycle in advance and check their availability online.
