Delhi University on Friday accepted that its first cut-off list is "unrealistically" high in order to avoid "over-admissions" but maintained that the students should not panic as there are plenty of seats to accommodate them and further lists will be more realistic.

"As the number of students taking admission is set to become clear after the admissions to fist cut off list tomorrow, the aspirants will get to know that there are plenty of seats to accommodate them and the further cut off lists will be more 'realistic'," a senior varsity official said.

The first cut-off list for Delhi University's undergraduate courses has yet again "sky-rocketed" with two colleges this time setting the threshold at 100 per cent for admission to the B.Sc (Computer Science) course. With the steep cut-offs for UG courses, DU has caused widespread dismay amongst students. The soaring of the eligibility bar, beyond the perfect 100 per cent mark has been termed "absurd" and "unbelievable" by the aspirants.

Accepting that the first cut-off list is "unrealistic", the official said, "always the first cut off list is theoretically generated on the basis of number of applications where primarily every candidate has applied to every college".

According to the admission guidelines, the colleges are mandated to enroll all the students meeting the cut-off criteria and no first-cum-first-serve policy is permitted. "To avoid any unwanted situation arising due to over admissions, each college announces high cut offs in the first list. Once the students with high percentage get themselves admitted in one college, second and subsequent cut-offs drop in almost all colleges," the official said.
