An injection is usually something that helps you get better. But for 27-year-old Ravi Kumar, it was the opposite. On Saturday, as the cashier finished his work at the Kotak Mahindra Bank in North Delhi's Sadar Bazar area, he was brutally stabbed to death by two men in the back of the neck.

The weapon was not the usual dagger, but a needle, an injection — carrying Midazolam and Fortwin Phenergan — a dangerous combination of drugs if injected in high doses.

A senior doctor said that Midazolam, a drug, used on seizure patients to control fits can result in complete paralysis, while Fortwin Phenergan, a pain killer drug, can result in breathing problems if too high an amount is given. It was this lethal combination of drugs that worked on Kumar, causing him to first go into paralysis and then die agonisingly as his body struggled for breath. Locals did rush Ravi to a hospital but it was too late and he died on Sunday morning.

The motive for this murder involved an affair. Police officers said that Ravi was killed by Anish Yadav (30) and Prem Kumar (27). Anish was in love with Ravi's wife and Prem was a hired killer.

DCP, North, Jatin Narwal, revealed just what had led to the murder. "Anish and Ravi's wife had studied together till their college days. Anish had feelings for his wife and wanted to marry her. Despite marrying someone else in February 2016, he was still in love with her," he said. Ravi's marriage was in July 2016.

Hate for Ravi clouded Anish's mind and soon he hired Prem to kill him. Speaking to investigators, Prem said that he had received over a lakh of rupees from Anish to ensure Ravi's death. Such an amount was not difficult for the well off Anish, who not only owned a gymnasium in Palam colony but was also a qualified psychotherapist.

Coming to the modus operandi, the plan was chillingly simple. Prem revealed that that they had stolen the drugs and the injection from a prominent hospital. The police are verifying the claims and further investigations are under way. To make sure they weren't traced, the duo switched off their mobile phones as they waited for Ravi to emerge from the bank.

Police say that as Ravi finished work, they followed him down a lane. Said Narwal, "When he reached the lane opposite West-End cinema near Bara Tooti Chowk, Prem attacked him from the back and forcibly administered the injection on his triangular near neck forcibly." Ravi fell to the ground paralysed and Prem and Anish then tried to flee. However, locals caught them and handed them over to the police.

A case under Section 302 (murder) and 328 (causing hurt by means of poison) has been registered against the duo.

After Ravi married, Anish left his wife as he wanted to marry Ravi's wife. He could not accept the fact that the woman was leading a happy life without him and hatched a plan to eliminate Ravi so that his road to marry her was clear.
