The CPM is yet to make up its mind on whether or not it wants an electoral alliance with the Congress.

The party schools led by general secretary Sitaram Yechury and the other headed by his predecessor Prakash Karat remain steadfast on their respective positions.

After a three-day long meeting of the Central Committee, the CPM in its communiqué attacked the Modi government, the BJP and the RSS by calling to intensify "people's struggle", it chose to remain silent on the question of political or electoral alliances.

According to sources, former Kerala chief minister V S Achuthanandan along with state finance minister Thomas Isaac argued powerfully on the need to strategise with non-Left parties to defeat BJP and fight communalism, the biggest danger facing the country.

The CPM veteran differed with the political resolution that was at the centre-stage of the discussion.

The dominant party line, led by Karat and supported by nine others in the 15-member politburo, is against having an electoral truck with the Congress.

As five politburo members, including general secretary Sitaram Yechury, are of the view that the situation calls for a revision of the stand against electoral alliances, adopted at the 2015 party Congress, an alternative document too was sent to the central committee.

Based on the discussion at the central committee and polit bureau's line, the political resolution will now be redrafted.

Meanwhile, in its statement the central committee described BJP's Janaraksha Yatra campaign in Kerala as a big flop and claimed that it has had a negative impact as is shown in the results of Vengara by-elections where the BJP vote fell sharply and it was pushed to the fourth position.

"This all-out campaign... has been intensified because of the consistent struggle that the Party and the Left have been waging against their communal politics," the statement said.

The CC also called for instituting a probe in the latest "scam" involving Jay Shah, son of BJP President Amit Shah along with other cases like the Vyapam scam, Bihar land scam, Panama Papers, Sahara-Birla diaries, Lalit Modi case etc.
