An 80-year-old retired additional district judge allegedly shot himself from his licensed gun in Sihani Gate Station area on Friday morning. The family said that he was living under depression ever since the death of his wife. The deceased has been identified as Devdutt Sharma, a retired judge, who shot himself in his room.

A gunshot was heard early morning. Sharma’s body was found lying in a pool of blood on his bed near his double-barrel licensed gun, Akash Tomar, Superintendent Of police (city), Ghaziabad.

“The incident took place at around 5.45 in the morning. Sharma’s  daughter-in-law entered his room to give him tea, when she found out Sharma was lying on the bed in a pool of blood. On spotting him in this condition, she raised an alarm and other family members of the house rushed to his room,” the SP said.

A police control room call was made and a team reached the spot and found him lying in a pool of blood with a licensed gun next to the body. The body was sent for post-mortem and started investigating the matter. “Initial inquiry revealed that Sharma was a cheerful person and lived in Nehru Nagar colony with his family. However, a few months ago his wife died after which, he started feeling lonely and gradually went into depression,” said Tomar.

“After the death of his wife, he had restricted himself  to his room and didn’t talk much to the family members. We tried to get him out of depression but for him the loss was too big and he took this big step,” said a family member, who did not wish to be named.

According to the police, as per the information provided by the family, they are treating this case as a suicide, however they are exploring all the angles in the case. No suicide note was recovered from the spot, the police said.
