Delhi Police have busted a gang of criminals who used to hire garbage carts from rag pickers at Rs 100 and then target high-end models parked in posh areas across the capital. The expensive looking stereos were either stolen or sold for a meagre price or supplied to branded showrooms at local markets, especially in Gaffar Market, Palika Bazaar, Kashmere Gate and Lajpat Nagar.

According to the police, the accused, identified as 30-year-old Salim alias Suman, the kingpin and a resident of West Bengal, used to operate along with his accomplices Wasim, 23, and Saaleem, 39.

"The trio used to roam around in posh areas between 1 am to 4 am. Salim used to check all the high end car models and see if there was an alarm fitted in it. His accomplices would then act on his signal and target vehicles without an alarm system. They first used to shatter the window glass and then use screwdrivers to uninstall the entire stereo sets. Usually they only targeted expensive sets with LCD displays which were in demand at cheap prices," said Nupur Prasad, DCP, Shahadra.

The gang was busted by the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) Shahadra, following a tip off and about 50 stereo sets were recovered from their possession, worth over 3.5 lakh, which they admitted that were to be sold either hand to hand on demand or at local markets in the Capital. Police also suspect that a large amount of such stereo sets have been supplied to dealers in Kashmere Gate, Lajpat Nagar, Gaffar Market and Palika Bazaar.
