For the first time in 31 days, the Delhi Police have got a whiff of the movement of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, right after he went missing from the varsity hostel. In what could be a crucial lead, the Crime Branch has traced an auto rickshaw driver, who drove Najeeb to Jamia Millia Islamia in the early hours of October 15, after he was suspended from the hostel following a scuffle.

Joint Commissioner of Police Ravindra Yadav told DNA: "We have been able to trace the movement of Najeeb Ahmed on October 15. He took an auto from JNU and reached Jamia." Before shifting to Mahi Mandavi hostel in JNU campus, Ahmad was living with his relatives in Jamia.

After a scuffle with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) students on October 15, Najeeb, a student of biotechnology, was suspended from the hostel. He then reportedly called his mother Fatima Nafees and said he was depressed over the incident. Thereafter, the Badaun native went missing.

Meanwhile earlier in the day, the Delhi Police had raised the reward, from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, for anyone providing information leading to Najeeb. The initial reward was set at Rs 50,000, which was later increased to Rs 1 lakh and then to Rs 2 lakh.

Last week, the case was transferred from the district police to the Crime Branch for a "fresh look".

The issue had almost paralysed the functioning of the varsity, with the agitating JNU Students Union keeping Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar and other university officials under siege for over 20 hours.

Following the incident, the Union Home Ministry had asked the Delhi Police to form a Special Investigating Team to trace Najeeb. Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung had also pulled up the force and asked the Commissioner of Police, Alok Kumar Verma, to make all efforts to trace the missing student.
