The Delhi Police registered an FIR against 24 students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for allegedly misbehaving with the Varsity Vice-Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar and "illegally" confining him in the Rector's office on February 27.

A case was registered on Wednesday night at the Vasant Kunj police station based on a complaint filed by the Varsity's Registrar on March 4. The complaint stated that the students had wrongfully confined the Vice-Chancellor to the Rector-1 office, after calling off their blockade of the administrative building on February 27, a senior police officer said.

"Based on the complaint, a case under section 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint), 342 (Punishment for wrongful confinement) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at Vasant Kunj (North) police station on Wednesday," he added.

According to the officer, the students were adamant to meet the VC even though he was unwell. "The students followed the VC and other officials to the administrative building and confined him in the Rector's office. The VC was unwell and had called in a doctor, however the agitated students did not allow the doctor to attend him."

In its complaint, the varsity has also alleged misbehaviour by the same group of students the next day after he finally agreed to meet them. The VC agreed to this after a woman student threatened to jump from a building.
