Monday's incident where a school student was stabbed by his classmates was not the only one that has brought brutality by juveniles to the fore. As data from the National Crime Records Bureau reflects, there has been a steep rise in involvement of juveniles in criminal cases across the country and the national Capital has been no exception.

Last month, a 25-year-old Delhi Police constable was allegedly stabbed by a juvenile in central Delhi's Patel Nagar area when he tried to catch him. In another shocking recent case, on March 23 this year, a four-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by her 16-year-old neighbour inside a semi-constructed toilet in outer Delhi’s Narela.

Police said that the juvenile accused was allegedly planning to bury the girl’s body when another boy from the neighbourhood saw him and raised an alarm, following which the locals apprehended the teenager and he was handed over to the police.

Even in April last year, a number of cases where brutal acts by juveniles came to light, were recorded.

While on April 8, a 51-year-old Uber cab driver was shot dead allegedly by two juvenile passengers who later dumped his body at an open field in Delhi’s Mundka area, a day before this, on April 7, an 8-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered by a juvenile in west Delhi. In another case, same month, two juveniles were apprehended for allegedly abducting and murdering a 17-year-old boy.

According to a data by the National Crime Records Bureau data, in 2015, the number of cases registered against juveniles were 64, while in 51 cases juveniles were booked for attempt to murder. In other heinous crimes like rape, in 119 cases juveniles were found involved while in four cases of gang-rape.

The data also suggests that the rate of cases in which juveniles were booked, has witnessed a constant rise in past five years, between 2011 to 2015.
