Two days after a 32-year-old woman was molested and groped in the heart of the National Capital — Connaught Place — on Thursday, police are yet to arrest the accused. The accused, stated to be in his 20's, also snatched the woman's phone while fleeing from the terrace of a building. The police have put the mobile phone on surveillance and are trying to trace the accused.
Early on Thursday, a language professor, who went to her office terrace for a break, was molested by a man who had followed her to the terrace. The accused not only groped her, but also masturbated in front of her. The woman, who remembers the face of the accused, is afraid that he may repeat the act, since he is yet to be arrested. "We have some clues and are investigating the case. A dedicated team has been formed for that. We will also call the victim to assist us in making a sketch of the accused. His face is not clearly visible in the CCTV footage," said BK Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi.
The incident took place when the woman went to the terrace for her usual smoke. A man in his mid 20s followed her to the terrace, but she didn't pay much attention. The accused had been constantly ogling at her on the pretext of attending a phone call. The man didn't budge even after she confronted him. Suddenly then, he came in front of her and pointed at her breasts.
Speaking to DNA, the victim said: "I pushed him and threatened to call the police. Instead of feeling deterred, he unzipped his pants and began touching his private parts. When I tried to run past him, he grabbed me and ejaculated."
Upon making another attempt to free herself, the victim found out that the door had been bolted already. By this time, the accused caught up with her and pushed her against the door. "He said he liked my breasts. After I raised an alarm, he snatched my mobile phone, hopped on to another terrace, and fled," she said.
The incident highlights the loopholes in the policing and patrolling in the heart of the city. It also brings to fore how terraces of buildings in Connaught Place are accessible to just anyone. The accused seemed to be aware of the fact that he could simply hop on to another terrace and escape easily.
The victim, who was contemplating changing her place of work, has been assured by the cops that the accused would be arrested.
