The Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police booked a former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator from Sahibabad on Sunday for the murder of BJP worker Gajendra Bhati, who was shot dead by some unidentified miscreants in Ghaziabad on Saturday.

According to the police, Bhati's brother Yogesh had lodged a complaint at the Khora police station, alleging that his brother was killed at the behest of former BSP legislator Amarpal Sharma.

Speaking to DNA, Yogesh said his brother had seemed disturbed for the last three-four days, and upon being queried, he had said that Sharma was threatening him. "Gajendra said he wanted to contest in the upcoming municipal elections in Khora but Sharma was warning him against doing that," he said.

Talking about the fateful day, Yogesh said in the afternoon, he and his sister-in-law Reena Bhati were travelling in a car while Gajendra and his colleague Balbir Chauhan were ahead on a bike.

"They had reached near the RK Memorial school in Khora when two assailants opened fire at them and fled towards Delhi. The two were rushed to hospital, where Gajendra was declared dead on arrival," Yogesh said.

He added that that he can recognise the assailants, if they are produced before him.

"We have registered an FIR on the basis of the complaint filed by Yogesh. All CCTV footage, call records, and statements of eyewitnesses are being explored to aid investigation," Superintendent of Police (City), Ghaziabad, Akash Tomar said.
