A Delhi Police Head Constable was injured at a picket in south Delhi's Mahipalpur area on Sunday when a speeding vehicle rammed into the barricade next to him. Senior officers said the cop was out of danger and the errant driver was absconding.

Police said the incident took place on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. Head Constable Premchand was checking vehicles with his team from the Vasant Kunj police station when a vehicle rammed into the barricade on a service road along NH 8. The impact of the collision was such that the cop was thrown metres away and sustained severe leg injury.

"The car had a UP registration number plate. Premchand signalled the vehcile to stop, but instead, the driver increased the speed and hit the barricade. The injured cop was immediately rushed to hospital. His right leg was fractured. A case has been registered. The vehicle was later found abandoned and has been seized," Additional DCP (south) Chinmoy Biswal said.

The accused has been booked under Sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), and 279 (rash and negligent driving), of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
