A Delhi police Head Constable indulged in a fist fight with three men and foiled a robbery attempt on a passerby in Shahadra on Tuesday. Senior officers said the man grabbed one of the accused and did not let him flee even though he kept stabbing him with a knife.
The other two men escaped from the scene. The incident took place when the policeman, Head Constable Mukesh Hooda who was patrolling his beat, saw three men targeting a passerby.
The victim, later identified as one Ajay Kumar, a resident of Nand Nagri, was crying for help as the trio was extorting money from him at knife point.
"Seeing the act, Hooda reacted without delay and intervened. Seeing the cop, the three men threatened him of dire consequences, asking him to leave. When he headed towards them, one of them took out a knife and attacked the cop. Hooda then caught one of them and a fist fight started," said Nupur Prasad, DCP Shahadra.
"The two other associates tried to free their aide, but when they failed, they fled," he added
The accused was later identified as Ramavtar, a resident of Begu Sarai. Ramavatar also has a case of robbery filed against him in 2014.
"The policeman kept Ramavtar in custody till other policemen arrived on the spot and the accused was arrested.
During questioning he disclosed his fellow aides' names as Shravan and Musail Sheikh. Efforts to trace the duo are being made and the accused has been booked for attempt to murder and under other relevant sections," the DCP said.
