Days after rolling back the curfew timing for women hostel residents and prohibiting them from protesting against the “discriminatory rules”, the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has now deleted the clause from its prospectus.

The university has written to the parents of female residents at its hostels seeking their views on the curfew timing of 9 pm. Earlier in March, the university had announced to give a curfew relaxation till 10:30 pm following protest by female residents over “discriminatory” hostel rules in March.

However, last month, when the university uploaded its new prospectus and the curfew timing was mentioned as 9pm. And, a new clause was mentioned in an undertaking to be signed by all women residents, saying, “I will not indulge in any protest or Signature Campaign against Hostel Rules, Regulations or timing. I accept that freely and fully. If I fail to abide by these my accommodation in the hostel can be cancelled immediately.”

The move had created an uproar among the students who termed it as a “murder of dissent”.

Earlier, the JMI officials had said that the curfew time was rolled back as the administration was receiving requests from parents. “We share every parent’s concern for their daughters’ security away from homes in Delhi. Since the girl’s security is our mutual concern we are sharing this with you. Kindly send your reviews on 9 pm return timing for your daughters by July 24,” the letter sent to parents read.

However, the university’s move to write to the parents have anguished the female students.
