With a large number of people showing interest in joining Congress for the upcoming municipal polls, the Grand Old Party on Wednesday formed a three-member committee to select its candidates.

Senior party leaders Anand Sharma, Randeep Surjewala, and Manic Tagore will manage this committee. Sources in the party said a cold war was going on within the party for tickets. "A lot of senior leaders are making a beeline outside the party office to get tickets for MCD elections," a senior Congress leader said.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) Chief Ajay Maken has now shifted the responsibility of picking the candidates on to the said committee.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, several youth Congress members had protested outside party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi's office and the state party office, demanding fair distribution of tickets for the municipal elections. They had also demanded an increased representation of youths in the polls.

"There has been a lot of dissent in the party regarding the distribution of tickets. There are a number of party workers from the youth wing, who are popular among students and in their own areas. They must be given a chance, if the party wants to pick real candidates who can actually work," a youth wing member said, requesting anonymity.

The party workers said it was time to announce the names of candidates, as they needed to start campaigning.

Unfazed by the protest, however, senior leaders said they will proceed the way they have decided as far as the distribution of tickets is concerned. "We have received nearly 12,000 applications. The candidates will be selected after proper scrutiny, Congress leader Chattar Singh said.
