Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken visited Punjab on Thursday to meet with newly elected CM Amarinder Singh. Congress sources said that Maken will be taking advice and from Singh on how to counter the Aam Aadmi Party, in the upcoming municipal polls in the Capital, scheduled for April 22.

Maken, who also attended the oath taking ceremony of Amarinder as the 26th chief minister of Punjab on Thursday, will also interact with Punjab leaders who actively campaigned to topple AAP in the recently concluded assembly elections in the state won by the Congress party.

Party sources said that Amarinder also had lengthy discussions with Maken about the counter strategies he had adopted in Punjab to stop the AAP influence in the state. "They talked about the issues that need to be stressed. They also talked about increasing the organizational strength," said a party source. "Amarinder has also asked Maken to expose AAP and caution people about the people of the state against getting deceived by hollow promises and false propaganda," said a party worker.

Amarinder also warned Maken that AAP will rake up the Sikh riot issue in the city and that needed to be dealt with strongly.

Sources also stated that Amarinder advised Maken to come down hard on disgruntled leaders and to create a single window system in the party. "The state Congress have prepared a detailed blueprint of local agendas at booth level and also have prepared a list of issues in each slum and unauthorized colonies in Delhi," said senior Delhi Congress leader Chatar Singh. He added that the people of Delhi were now waiting for an opportunity to teach AAP a lesson.

The Grand Old Party has received more than 12,000 applications for 272 wards and they are to announce the names of the candidates by next week. Sources also said Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will actively campaign in the municipal corporations election in Delhi and will also address huge rallies.

Buoyed by its success in the May 2016, MCD by-polls, where it managed to win five of the 13 wards, Congress is hopeful of winning the elections to the three municipal corporations scheduled in April. The party also hinted that all the sitting councillors in the three municipal corporations are likely to get tickets this time too. In the three corporations, the Congress has 88 councillors. Also, the party has set up a call centre to cross-check their claims and credibility among party workers.
