More than 600 Delhi Police staffers were suspended and 109 were dismissed from the service in 2016, while the total number of complaints against the officers saw a marginal decline in the year, according to the Delhi Police’s annual report.
As many as 616 police personnel, including 36 Inspectors, 87 Sub Inspectors, 43 Assistant Sub Inspectors, 138 Head Constables, and 347 Constables were suspended based on various complaints in 2016, the report stated.
In the same year, 437 police personnel were given major punishments, including 109 dismissals and 129 were censured, the report further said. Besides, the Vigilance Department received around 2,335 complaints against its personnel in 2015, which reduced to 1,178 in 2016, the report stated. The complaints of corruption or extortion were pegged at 1,202 in 2015, which came down to 528 last year.
Complaints of connivance against police personnel in land and property matters fell from 95 in 2015 to 31 in 2016, according to the report. Also, 175 complaints of non-registration of cases were registered in 2015, which came down to 109 last year. There were 129 ‘nexus with criminals’ complaints against policemen in 2015, but last year saw just 12 such complaints. There were 31 complaints of faulty investigation last year, down from 58 in 2015, and 58 complaints of connivance of policemen in organised unlawful activities were registered in 2015, which fell to 31 in 2016, the report stated.
Last year, the Vigilance department initiated 696 departmental inquiries, wherein 863 police personnel, including 36 Inspectors and 164 SIs were allegedly involved.
