The move, however, will hardly solve the housing problem in the Capital, which will need 24 lakh additional dwellings by 2021, according to the Master Plan of Delhi (MPD). Till date, DDA has been able to construct only 11.69 lakh dwelling units. Houses across categories, including EWS, LIG, MIG and HIG, will be up for grabs in all five zones of Delhi. Sources in DDA said the developing agency has already identified the sites and the planning wing of the agency has been asked to chalk out the implementation of the project.
The cost of these houses houses is, however, yet to be finalised.
Sources said of the 16,584 flats, close to 5,000 houses will be under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category and 6,000 under the High Income Group (HIG) category. DDA also plans to construct 5,000 houses under the Low Income Group (LIG) and Middle Income Group (MIG) housing categories collectively.
The latest project will come up in areas including Vasant Kunj, Preet Vihar, Dwarka, Rohini, Mandawali, Phazulpur, and Khichdipur. In order to attract bidders, the agency is planning to waive off the five-year lock-in period imposed on the ownership of the flats. sources said.
The lock-in had resulted in a dismal response from home seekers in 2014. Of the 25,000 houses that were made available by DDA, almost 13,000 were turned down by successful allottees. While the houses are expected to be up for re-allotment early next year, the registration money for them has been increased to Rs 3 lakh for LIG and and Rs 5 lakh for MIG houses.
“The entire project will come up as part of a thoroughly thought-out housing society at par with the Dwarka housing society. The officials have been asked to pursue the architects concerned,” a senior DDA official said, adding that the project is still in its planning stage and no deadline has been set so far.
“The respective chief engineers have been asked to prepare a detailed project report. Besides, the officials have been asked to prepare initial project estimates and initiate the project immediately. Once the project reports have been submitted, we will seek permissions from various departments,” said the official.
