On the 126th birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that the formation of a Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the national capital post the municipal corporation elections. It is being regarded as a move to woo the Dalit community and sanitation workers ahead of the corporation polls on April 23. But the opposition parties stated that this announcement amounted to a violation of model code of conduct.

"There are several commissions in Delhi, but none dedicated to the SC and ST communities. After MCD polls, we will introduce a law to form a commission that will provide them justice," said Kejriwal, after paying tributes to a statue of Ambedkar in the premises of the Delhi Assembly.

According to the 2011 Census report, the total population of Scheduled Castes was 28,12,309 in Delhi.

Kejriwal's promise comes a day after his party saw a humiliating defeat in the by-poll to the Rajouri Garden Assembly seat that was vacant because its legislator had resigned to contest elections in the Punjab Assembly.

In the meantime, questioning the timing of the statement of Kejriwal, Vijender Gupta, Leader of Opposition, said, the CM is guilty of making such an announcement on government policies on the eve of municipal elections. This amounts to an open violation of the model code of conduct.

He demanded that the Election Commission of Delhi take immediate, strong action in the matter. "This announcement of the CM is only a ploy to exploit the sentiments of SC and ST communities," Gupta said. Pointing to the fact that Kejriwal is least concerned for the betterment of the SC and ST community, Gupta said, "He deliberately did not appoint a Minister for Welfare of SC and ST for more than eight months after the dismissal of Sandeep Kumar."
