Hundreds of guest teachers of schools under the Delhi government organised a protest demonstration on Wednesday, soon after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the policy decision regarding changes in their salary structure.

Stating that the announcements were empty promises, teachers blocked the Outer Ring Road, causing a massive traffic jam. They also raised huge hue and cry over the Delhi government order that made it mandatory for the teachers to attend the CM’s address.

Meanwhile, addressing the teachers at the Chhatrasal Stadium, Kejriwal talked about raising their salaries and providing basic facilities in schools. The Delhi government had recently sent 90 school principals to Cambridge, and Kejriwal promised that 200 more mentor teachers will be sent to Singapore for training soon.

The announcements, however, failed to impress teachers at the event. “It has become a norm for the Delhi government to make futile announcements regarding our salaries. They assure us of doing something constructive but then nothing comes of it. We are being paid on a daily basis. We don’t get salaries for our off days,” said Deepak Vashisht, 24, a guest teacher.

He added: “Unlike permanent teachers at government schools, we are not paid for the months of May and June, when schools remain shut for the summer break.”

Some other teachers claimed that they were forced to attend the CM’s rally. “We had received a diktat that it was compulsory for us to attend the rally,” said Vishnu Kumar, another guest teacher.

Guest teachers at the government schools in the national Capital have been at loggerheads with the state government regarding their salaries and temporary status for long.
