There was high drama at the elevated Metro line between Kaushambi and Vaishali after a man was spotted hanging from there, as he tried to jump off to save himself from coming under a Metro train.

Deen Dayal, 30, missed his train and decided to walk through the Metro track till the next station, creating a security scare on Thursday.

Around 1.50 pm, locals saw a man hanging from the Metro bridge, crying for help. A PCR call was made and fire tenders rushed to rescue Dayal, who had to be admitted to the Yashoda hospital where he was declared out of danger by Friday evening.

Dayal told the police that he arrived at the Kaushambi station on blue line to go to Nangloi on the green line.

"He said that he got down at the Vaishali station after realising that he had boarded a wrong train. From there, he boarded a train to Kirti Nagar station. While waiting at the Vaishali station, Dayal missed a train. Unaware of the frequency of Metro trains, he got on the tracks and started walking in the direction of that train," said a senior CISF officer.

The CCTV operator at the station's control room spotted the man on the tracks and alerted a Quick Response Team and the station in-charge immediately.

"Our teams swung into action instantly, but by the time they reached the location, the man had disappeared. Since it was not safe to walk on the tracks, we spread the message to the central control room as trains would have to be stopped. CISF officials at the next station were also alerted since the man's motive was not known," said the officer.

After about a minute, Dayal saw a train heading straight towards him, and, in order to save himself, he got over the railing of the bridge to jump off. Since the jump could have been fatal, Dayal hung on to the bridge and cried for help. "Fire fighters arrived and he was rescued. He got his leg injured," said the officer.

A number of commuters are held by the CISF and DMRC every year for walking through the Metro tracks, which is a fineable offence. DNA had earlier reported that over 400 commuters were held in 2016 alone for the offence.

"Usually these people are outsiders, and are not aware of Metro rules. They are penalised and are set free with a warning," a CISF officer said.
