Forty five people had a narrow escape after the bus they were travelling in caught fire.

The people were on their way home after a wedding function they had attended in Surajkund. Fortunately, police officers and locals were swift to react to the situation and helped save the lives of several women and children.
But the fire brigade arrived over half an hour later and locals said the bus was charred by then.

Meanwhile, the wedding festivities of Dinesh Sharma's sister were about to wind up in Surajkund when he received a call stating that the bus that his close relatives — including his other sister and children — had caught fire.

"At around 1.30 am, after the relatives left the venue and were going towards our residence in Jaitpur, there was a blast in the bus and it caught fire. The bus had all our close relatives and most of them were women and children," said Sharma.

The bus had automatic doors which got locked in no place for the passengers to escape. Passengers also tried opening windows but were not successful.

A team of police officers including Station House Officer (SHO) Ajay Pratap, ASI Lokpal and Lokinder, Constable Manoj, Constable Khemraj and Constable Bobby reached the location and with the help of the local people who came forward rescued the passengers. Breaking open the windows of the bus with stones, the police officers were able to enter the bus and rescue the passengers.

"It appears that the bus was not maintained properly and a regular inspection was not carried out. Had a regular check been done then I feel the incident wouldn't have occurred," added Sharma.

"The reaction by the police officers was swift as well as prompt to an extent that even before the police control room received a call the officers had already started the rescue work. Local people also helped the cops to make sure no one was stuck inside the bus. The bus had completely burned down and two fire tenders later reached the spot to douse the fire," said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP, South-East.
