The municipal corporation election results in Delhi will be announced on Wednesday. Three major political parties —Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress — had contested the polls.

The exit polls have given a clean sweep to BJP, sending both AAP and Congress into a tizzy. As per the exit polls, BJP may win 220 out of total 270 seats. The party leaders, however, have remained tight-lipped over the situation.

For AAP, getting decimated in the corporation elections on its home turf will be a matter of grave concern. It will also bring Arvind Kejriwal's leadership into question. Fingers were pointed at Kejriwal for managing the poll campaign in an autocratic manner.

Concerned about a revolt within the party if the BJP wins, Kejriwal recently set into motion a narrative regarding manipulation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), while warning of launching a "movement" once again. After being washed out in Goa and Punjab Assembly elections, the civic elections have become crucial for AAP. For Congress, the poll result will decide the political future of Delhi party Chief Ajay Maken. In the run-up to the polls, Congress had faced an open rebellion from some senior leaders, which ended with party loyalist Arvinder Singh Lovely joining the BJP.

The result of the contest would also be interesting as nearly half of the Delhi did not even turn up to vote. During 2015 legislative Assembly elections, the total turnout was 67.13 per cent and in 2013 legislative Assembly elections, it was 65.93 per cent. In 2014, Delhi Lok Sabha elections, 65.07 per cent people voted. Compared to these figures, the turnout for municipal polls was quite low.

The results will be closely watched by all stakeholders, including the public. The counting of the votes polled in 270 wards would begin at 8 am on Wednesday. As many as 35 counting venues have been set up across the city — 16 in north Delhi, 13 in the south and six in east Delhi. The State Election Commission (SEC) would announce the final results after 5 pm. According to the election body, as many as 90,000 security personnel from various forces will be deployed at these counting centres.
