This year's budget marks sanitation as one of the prominent sectors where the EDMC would be spending big time. The move comes after sanitation workers' union announced their strike against unpaid salaries and demands of regularisation.

Although the corporation this year claims to have enough funds to manage the salaries of these workers but this year's budget reflects that soon the EMDC will shift most of its working to technological implements and minimum human resources would be used to maintain the eastern Delhi's cleanliness.

For the purpose, the EDMC has proposed to procure 50 battery-operated Litter Pickers, 64 Auto Mounted Litter Pickers, 20 Fixed Compactors, 6 Mechanical Sweepers, 10 Accelerated Compost Machines, 2 bio-methanization Plants with 5 tons per day capacity, 100 tons capacity bio-methanization Plant, 2 Super Sucker machines and 10 suction-cum-jetting machines.

Out of the proposed items, the EDMC has already installed six mechanical sweepers, 10 accelerated compost machines while a 100-ton capacity bio-methanation plant has been ordered.

The EDMC has already been using 302 Auto Tipper, 1,200 cycle rickshaws, 80 departmental trucks, 50 private trucks, 15 departmental and 26 private loaders. However, this year the corporation is planning to install garbage compactors at two more places.

The authorities have found that one of the biggest problems for the garbage disposal system has been the on the source segregation system, which failed to work. But to make sure the system is used by everyone, the EDMC will run social campaigns and has already placed 1,600 twin bins of 100 litre capacity, while 3,300 more such twin bins would be placed soon. In the previous year, the corporation distributed about 43,000 plastic dustbins of 12 litre capacity among the residents and is planning to distribute one lakh more of them.
