The North Delhi Municipal Corporation kicked off its ambitious project to replace over two lakh conventional street lights with LED lights in the next nine months as a gift to the residents this Diwali on Wednesday.

According to the officials of the North civic body, the project to convert over 2 lakh conventional streetlights into LED is said to be a move that will save Rs 50 crore of the civic body annually. The project kickstarted from Rohini Zone which was inaugurated by North Delhi Mayor, Preety Agarwal's municipal ward and Delhi BJP President and Member of Parliament Manoj Tiwari.

"This project is dedicated to the citizens of North Delhi. This is a Diwali gift from the civic body to them as it would lighten their paths and lives. We are hopeful that the entire project would be completed well before the scheduled time," said North Delhi Mayor Preety Agarwal.

According to Tiwari, delivering maximum at minimum possible cost is the motto of this government. "Converting the lights would also make the street lights energy efficient. The saving will help NDMC spend it on other development works for the people," said Manoj Tiwari, Delhi BJP President.

The entire conventional lighting system, semi half-mast lights and lights in parks of North Delhi will be replaced with LEDs. In total, there are 2.05 lakh street lights in the NDMC area. A contract has been awarded for 1.15 lakh light fixtures in its two of the bigger zones — Rohini and Narela. Remaining 90,000 will be in the City, Civil Lines, Sadar Paharganj and Karol Bagh zones, the NDMC said.

According to the civic body, besides energy saving, recurring maintenance charges of around Rs 24 crore being paid to discoms, Rs 7 crore for the maintenance of semi high mast lights, and Rs 3 crore for their replacement fittings annually, would be saved as the concessionaire will take care of it, it said.
