In what seems to be a direct impact of the BJP's sweeping victory in the MCD polls, the three corporations are going to start a drive against open-defecation under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Mission. The cleanliness mission is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet project.
The South Corporation plans to clean up over 2,000 urinals under its four zones — Central, South, West and Najafgarh, starting this week, said SDMC commissioner Puneet Kumar Goel on Wednesday.
"People generally avoid using corporation-run urinals for the popular perception of these being unhygienic. Complaints of stink emanating from urinals, was also found to be another reason compelling people to relieve themselves in the open. The drive is to take intensive efforts in this direction," said Goel.
The drive is meant to encourage people to use public toilets in order to curb open defecation. The civic body will be deploying 300 extra personnel for it. The additional manpower has been deployed to fast track the work of removing the stinking yellowish concentration from all the urinals, said officials.
"A checklist has been prescribed to ensure proper cleanliness and available infrastructure in order. The additional manpower will report the deficiencies related to floor, walls, washbasins, doors, dustbins, sanitary fittings, water and electricity to fix these issues," said Goel.
At the same time, North Corporation too is all set to launch a two-month long sanitation drive in all its six zones under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Mission as well.
