From charging SUVs a higher rate for parking to creating a first class compartment in public transport vehicles, all kinds of suggestions have come to the Delhi government for its new Draft Parking Policy. The city government's transport department had put the policy in public domain last month for suggestions on the same from people at large, RWAs and civic bodies.

The department has now extended the window to send suggestions till 31 July.

While some RWAs have sent full-fledged plan for parking in the city, others have given short, medium and long-term measures to deal with the parking mess in the capital.

Rajiv Kakria, member, Greater Kailsah-I, RWA has submitted detailed suggestions for the policy including increasing of parking charges for SUVs as these take more road space in comparison to other cars.

"To encourage use of small cars, parking fee should be charged based on length of car. Also, use of personal vehicle to commute between work and home should be discouraged while car-pooling and public transport must be the alternative options," Kakria has suggested.

Meanwhile, the three municipal corporations — North, South and East — which will also be the implementing agencies of the policy in the city have suggested increasing parking fee around commercial and residential complexes.

The Corporations have suggested to increase the penalty amount for defaulters.

"We are planning to develop more stack parking, which could be readied fast so that the policy could be implemented in time. We have asked DDA for land for commercial parking spaces, which can fetch revenue as well to maintain all these lots," said PK Gupta, Commissioner, North Corporation.

In order to enforce the policy, the North and South civic bodies have identified land for building 60 new parking spaces.

Once the suggestions are closed, the Draft will be sent to the Lieutenant Governor and put up for discussion in the Assembly.

Land for parking

South Corporation has identified land for 40 new stack parking lots
North Corporation will come up with 20 parking facilities — 8 to 10 will be multi-level parking while the others will be stack parking spaces
