Three months after DNA had exclusively quoted the Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) stating that commandos at sensitive installations like Delhi's IGI airport and Delhi Metro will undergo firing practice and tactical training every 15 days, the force on Friday said that a compact shooting range has been readied for the purpose and will soon be available.

Senior officers said that the shooting range, is a portable set up developed in a container for live indoor firing practice with small arms and is equipped with a smart target system which locates the misses and hits of the bullet accurately.

The range that would cost CISF around 80 lakh, contains a tubular booth, fire retarding material, acoustic and ricochet preventing material, compressed rubber and armoured steel butt with smart target system. CISF is planning to procure two such shooting ranges, officials said.

"The shooting range will be used for enhancing the capability of special VIP security group and those deployed in Delhi Metro and IGI Airport. Commandos will use weapons like AK-47, pistols, INSAS, MP-5 and Carbine machine guns to enhance their accuracy on targets," a senior CISF officer said. In May this year, DNA reported that following repeated terror attacks around the world, sensitive installations like airports and nuclear plants in the country also came increasingly under terror radar.

In order to polish skills of the commandos deployed at such critical and hypersensitive locations, the force had planned that such personnel would now undergo a tactical and thorough training and rigorous shooting practises at an interval of every 15 days, Director General CISF, OP Singh had then told DNA. As of now this is a bi-yearly or yearly feature.

In order to further step up vigilance, the forces are also procuring body cameras and portable explosive detectors. "While these cameras would help maintain a tighter vigil, the water resistant and self-monitoring explosive detector would help in not letting pass even minute explosive items. This would help CISF carry out smart vigilant airports, Delhi Metro and other sensitive areas," the officer said.

The CISF, at present, is in charge of the security at 59 airports in the country. While 18 of them are sensitive, 18 are hyper-sensitive, which includes the ones in New Delhi and other metro cities.
