After the molestation of a journalist at ITO metro station subway sparked a row over women's safety, Director General of CISF, the force that secures metro stations, and Delhi Police commissioner Amulya Patnaik, on Friday, discussed a review of the present security system of Delhi Metro.
It was on Tuesday night when the journalist who was entering the metro station was attacked by a man who attempted to grope the woman. CCTV footage of the incident which went viral on social media also shows that when the woman was confronted and raised an alarm, the man tried to escape but was chased by the journalist. A day later he was arrested by the Delhi Police and was identified as a 25-year-old tea stall worker.
Following the incident, while the DG CISF, OP Singh, has directed his DIG DMRC unit to review the security setup in Delhi Metro, Patnaik also ordered a Special Commissioner to look into the security structure that the Delhi Metro Rail Police (DMRP)follows. Soon the Delhi Police and CISF are expected to replan their security set up in Delhi Metro.
The incident took place in the subway that connects the main road to ITO metro station. When DNA looked into the security set up of a metro station, it was found that various areas are divided according to jurisdiction of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Delhi Police's DMRP.
However, Singh pointed out that the force is always the first responder to any incident inside or even in the proximity to any metro station. "For us, security and safety of passengers come first and we have always responded with our best. Such incidents are addressed with utmost priority and no laxity will be tolerated," Singh said.
Talking to DNA, a senior CISF officer said, "Technically the areas that fall under CISF's are start from frisking gates to the platform. The tracks, electrical installations over the tracks and areas beyond frisking areas, like the entry staircase or subways connecting the metro station to main roads are to be technically guarded by the DMRP. However, since the DMRP is drastically short staffed, our QRTs keep patrolling these areas also."
Even on Tuesday, the CISF was the first responder when the journalist was attacked at ITO, the DG claimed. Pankaj Singh, DCP Metro, said that they have requested for increased manpower.
SOLUTIONS NEEDED
- DMRP – metro train track tunnel, electrical installations over the track, subways connecting metro stations to main roads, staircase at entrance of metro stations
- CISF – from the frisking gates to the platforms
- Problem: Every metro station in the Capital is divided into different areas to be taken care of by the CISF and DMRP separately. This creates confusion over jurisdiction in such cases leading to delayed action
