Chhatarpur encounter: Panic, excitement among the locals

Residents in Fatehpur Beri area of Chhatarpur, where the encounter took place on Saturday afternoon, were in panic when they got to know that the sound which they thought was of crackers, actually was the fire exchange between cops and criminals. The encounter led to the killing of Delhi's most wanted gangster and 3 other criminals.

The incident sparked panic among the residents. While the area largely in inhabited by farmhouse owners, but there are a lot of servant quarters and residential settlements in the vicinity.

"I was at my tea stall when I heard a loud bang. Initially, I thought it was due to cracker bursting as the area has many farmhouses and marriage functions or private parties keep happening there. Later on, I heard about an encounter between police and criminals. When I rushed to the spot, I realised that the police had sealed the area and we were not allowed to go any further," said Arish, a tea stall owner.

While hundreds of locals thronged the encounter site just to see the police in action, however, the cops were trying to keep them away from the spot.

Locals had come to the encounter spot after watching the details on TV.

"We came to see the gangsters. We saw ambulances rushing bodies out of this place. Dog squads also arrived at the spot while the forensic team was already into action. It was exciting but at the same time threatening," said Vaibhav Mishra, a local.

Like Mishra, several other locals, who used the route for their daily commuting, said it was surprising to see such a criminal-police gun battle in the area. "I pass through this area often. When I learnt about the encounter that left four killed, and six policemen injured, I was shocked. We could not believe that our neighbourhood would turn out to be a criminals' hideout. And that too of such wanted gangsters," said Hussain Mohammad, a resident of Chhatarpur.
