Two more stations of the Delhi Metro - Chawri Bazar and Chandni Chowk have been added to the list of stations that have Platform Screen Doors (PSDs). The recently installed PSDs were made commercially functional on Wednesday by managing director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Mangu Singh. The new system will help prevent suicides and incidents of falling on the rail tracks.

According to senior DMRC official, the PSDs will help in better crowd management at these busy stations and at the same time prevent any untoward incidents in the Metro, like jumping or falling on the tracks.
The DMRC shares that installing and commissioning these doors at the two stations was a major challenge given the heavy traffic of commuters. They could be installed only during non-revenue hours depending on the availability of blocks during late night hours after passenger services closed for the day. It also required a lot of integration with various components of Metro operations. For instance, the software needed to be upgraded for coordinated movement of the doors. The movement of commuters was also regularised during the day where PSD installation was in progress.
The DMRC has been regularly grappling with cases of suicide on tracks. According to data available, as many as 76 people attempted suicide at various Metro stations in 2016, of which 12 died. In 2015 and 2014, 80 and 45 attempts were reported, respectively. Two people have already ended their lives by jumping in front of a speeding Metro in the first quarter of 2018.
Four other stations on Yellow Line, too, will have PSDs shortly. These include New Delhi, Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate. The PSDs will be installed in a phased manner after analysing the performance at Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazar stations. Apart from the Airport Express Line, such doors are already functional on the Botanical Garden-Kalkaji Mandir section of Line-8 and Majlis Park to Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section of Line-7.
