Chaotic situation was witnessed at petrol pumps across National Capital Region (NCR) as the staff at the petrol pumps across the city were reluctant to tender change of Rs500 or Rs1,000 to their patrons.

The petrol stations saw huge rush as Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that petrol pumps will have permission to accepted Rs500 or Rs1,000. This huge rush forced petrol pumps in Mayur Vihar to put up boards that said that they will only get fuel if exact change is given by the patron.

Naresh Gupta, a businessman from Mayur Vihar felt cheated as the fuel station did not return the change. “I wanted a full tank but couldn’t do so when they refused to pay the change,” he said.

Petrol pump owners in Noida claimed that the normal petrol was over and hence they were forced to fill premium petrol, they also noted down numbers and names of persons filling fuel so as to account the money.

“I have been driving an auto since the last 24 years, but today, I have only earned Rs300. The CNG pump also is not giving change. To fill the CNG in my auto I will need rs 350. Despite having money, I feel cashless,” said Mohammad Haasim Khan.

There was a scuffle at a station on Bhadur Shah Zafar Marg in Central Delhi. Luckily the police officers present at the pump controlled the situation.  Petrol pump owners claimed that their sales increased like never before.

“Generally, I sell around 11,000 litres of petrol but today till noon I have sold 11,000 litres already. Same was the case with diesel sales,” said the pump owner.

Motorists faced trouble as the card machines did not work at some petrol pumps and the cash amount was more than the amount of fuel needed in the vehicle. “I live in Maharani Bagh but the card machine at the petrol pump did not work hence I travelled till Mayur Vihar to fill fuel in my motor-cycle,” said Vikas Singh.

Autorickshaw drivers faced maximum disappointment as neither they had money to fill CNG nor they had cash to give back to commuters.

Knowing the rush and chaos that would occur, the Delhi Police informed all its districts to keep adequate deployment of police officers especially at the petrol pumps, banks and ATM’s.
