A day after the incident of rape of a six-year-old at a government school triggered controversy in the city, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday passed the buck to the BJP-led central government claiming that it has been stalling their ambitious CCTV installation scheme that would curb the crime against women in the Capital.

Claiming that the law and order of the Capital is controlled by the Centre, AAP national spokesperson Atishi Marlena said, "Whenever AAP steps forward to make Delhi crime free by installing cameras all around so that strict actions can be taken based on the evidence, the BJP gives its best efforts to cause disturbance in the work of public interest."

The Delhi Cabinet had approved the project of installing CCTV cameras across the national capital on Friday. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the decision during his speech in the Assembly, blaming Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash for delaying the project.

Marlena alleged that the BJP, through the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) of Delhi and a section of bureaucracy has been trying to take revenge from the people of Delhi for electing AAP. "People of Delhi want their elected government to install CCTV cameras in public places, residential areas, and markets. But, the BJP has been stalling it," she said. Similarly, AAP Chandni Chowk MLA Alka Lamba said that if the timely installations of cameras could have averted the incident

The class-II student was raped by an electrician at the premises of a New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) school in central Delhi on Wednesday. The accused was arrested by the police on Thursday evening. Hundreds of parents staged a protest outside the school and raised questions about the safety of their children on Friday. During the police investigation, no CCTV camera was found where the incident happened.

The Delhi government has been at loggerheads with the L-G over the CCTV project since last 2016.

In May this year, Kejriwal along with his ministers and legislators held a dharna near L-G's office accusing him of stalling the project to install 1.4 lakh CCTV cameras across the city at the "behest of the BJP".
