Two children were charred to death while their other sibling and mother sustained injuries after a fire broke out at their residence in Central Delhi's Desh Bandhu Gupta road in the wee hours on Thursday. The family had celebrated Diwali together hours before the incident.

According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Ganesh (10) and Swati (5). Their mother Suman and brother Dhruv are stated to be critical.

The family resides of five in a one-room accommodation on the first floor in the jhuggis in the area along with other members of the family on the ground, second and third floor.

"The incident occurred around 2 am. Suman's husband Kishan started shouting for help after their house caught fire. Neighbours and everyone came out to help them but the family was stuck inside," said a family member of Suman.

Manju, Suman's sister-in-law who resides on the third floor in the same building stated that the fire occurred as the Diya was kept close to the gas cylinder.

"The gas from the cylinder could be possibly leaking and hence the house caught fire. Suman was the head of the family and would take care of children. Kishan would often be in an inebriated state," she said.

Locals revealed that for at least two hours they tried to throw water and mud and douse the fire. "Both the doors of the house were jammed. There was no blast sound but the entire house was burnt. Suman was even trying to open the door. Luckily she managed to open half of it and come out. She also pulled out her other son Dhruv but could not pull out the other two," said a neighbour.

The bodies of the two were recovered from the bed. The family had celebrated Diwali in the area and returned home around 11:30 pm.

Kishan as per neighbours was earlier a rickshaw puller but remained unemployed for some time now. She would consume alcohol and generally remain outside the house.

The family of five resided in a one bedroom set in the area.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Mandeep Randhawa confirmed the incident and said "A PCR call was received at 2:32 am about a fire at the house. The injured are undergoing treatment at RML hospital. The crime team was called for inspection and inquest proceedings are underway," said Mandeep.
