The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has begun an investigation in connection with the murder of a resident doctor at the St. Stephen's hospital in August last year. The Delhi Police was earlier investigating the case but failed to trace the prime accused, another senior doctor at the hospital, who has been absconding for almost a year now.

Acting on the directions of the Delhi High Court, the CBI on Tuesday registered a case of murder and have begun an investigation in connection with the case.

Speaking to DNA Shalini Pande, the mother of the deceased said, "CBI is our last hope and the accused should be behind bars. The callous attitude of the Delhi Police is quite evident as they have failed to trace the accused till now."

"If the CBI doesn't find the accused then what will I do?" she asked.

Advocated Siddharth Dave, Pande's lawyer said, "The Delhi Police did not carry out the investigation in a fair manner. The investigation done by them was not up to the mark. The CBI has more resources and a pan-India approach."

On August 25, 2017, Shashwat Pande, a radiologist at the St. Stephen's hospital was found dead with his throat slit and multiple stab wounds inside the hospital's CT scan lab. The prime suspect in the case was another doctor Suyash Gupta who had allegedly been stalking the victim for the past two years. Gupta was suspended by the hospital as well. Pande had several times complained to the hospital authorities about the behaviour of the accused and harassment he was facing. The accused has allegedly fled to Nepal.

The family members of the accused had earlier refused a polygraph test. The family of the deceased also alleged that the police have not seized all the bank accounts and the accused has been on the run for a year now.

Gupta and Pande were on good terms and used to live together. But the relationship soured between them when Pande became friends with a nurse and did not give much time to Gupta. The two developed differences and Gupta then hatched a plan to kill Pande, the police had said.
