The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Station House Officer (SHO) of the Saket police station Neeraj Kumar Tyagi and a lawyer Neeraj Walia for allegedly taking a bribe to settle 47 cases against real estate company Unitech Limited and it founder Ramesh Chandra and his son Ajay Chandra. The agency is carrying out raids at several places in the national Capital.

Both -- Tyagi and Walia -- were arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to settle some matters related to the Unitech Group.

Interestingly, Tyagi was appointed as Station House Officer of Saket Police Station around two years ago with the approval of the then police commissioner Alok Kumar Verma, who is currently holding the post of the CBI director.

Despite the current Delhi police regime being unimpressed with Tyagi's work, he was allowed to "operate the police station" for his closeness to seniors, said sources in the police force.

Nine persons, including Ramesh Chandra , his son Ajay Chandra, a lawyer Neeraj Walia, SHO Neeraj Kumar, Upma Chandra, Seema Manga, Pradeep Kumar and Unitech Limited, have been named in the FIR registered by the CBI.

Explaining the modus operandi, a source in the agency said that the registered office of Unitech Limited at Community Centre in Saket gives leverage that all the alleged fraud incidents against the company would be first reported at Saket court; thereafter seeing the merit of the incidents the court would direct the station house officer of the Saket police station to register FIRs. In total 47 cases have been filed against Unitech Limited.

Tyagi's role was to fix the deal between the victim and the accused company and to do that he was rewarded with "bribe money" which was then shared in the force. Sources in the agency said that he was not eating up the "ill-gotten money" alone. He used to give a share of it to a senior police officer, said sources adding that the agency is also "looking at that aspect".

Further, the agency is also investigating the role of the money being paid to the SHO and other accused recipient and the role of the private company owners and their members of the legal team.

"We have suspended the station house office till further enquiry. We maintain the strictest action against the corrupt," Delhi Police issued a statement after Tyagi's arrest.
