It had been just 20 days at his new workplace. Manoj Kumar had hoped the switch would help him make more money for his eldest daughter's wedding. But fate had other plans and Kumar, whose latest assignment was to guard a cash van that refilled ATMs in the city, was attacked by a group of unidentified armed men on Thursday. The 33-year-old succumbed to the severe injuries on Sunday morning.

The incident took place in northwest Delhi's Bhalswa Dairy area around 4 pm. A cash van with four occupants, including Kumar, had arrived at an ATM when two men wearing helmets came on a bike and aimed a pistol at him. As Kumar tried to load his rifle, the robbers panicked and shot at him before fleeing with Rs 12 lakh. DCP northwest Milind Dumbre said the police were yet to make any arrests in the case.

Kumar was from the Sakatpur village of Etah dsitrict in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and had been working as a security guard for the last 10 years. A colleague, who had come to receive Kumar's body on Monday, said his bravery has won many hearts and that his family needs to be compensated.

Talking to DNA, Kumar's family members said he had been looking for a match for his eldest daughter and was not satisfied with the salary that he was drawing earlier. He then got the opportunity to work for a company that provided security for cash vans.

Kumar's brother Subhash said: "His colleagues told us that though the robbers had weapons, he did not step back. They warned him thrice but he was courageous enough to try and load his rifle. Seeing him armed as well, one of the two robbers shot at him. The bullet pierced his abdomen. Seeing him bleeding profusely, his colleagues fled from the spot."

Subhash further said that Kumar was taken to the nearby Babu Jagjeevan Ram Hospital but was referred to the LNJP Hospital without delay. The family has alleged that despite his critical state, Kumar was neither admitted to the ICU nor put on a ventilator.

KK Yadav, another of Kumar's brothers, said: "If the hospital authorities had admitted him to the ICU, my brother would have been alive today. His dedication towards his job is commendable, but he has left behind a family of three daughters and a son. He was the only earning member. If his employers or the government do not help, his family will face a really tough time."
