Carry out survival audit of plants, Delhi government tells city agencies

All the agencies assured that they will meet the deadline of achieving the target allocated to them for the current year

In its bid to combat air pollution, the Delhi government has now shifted its attention towards ensuring the survival of trees and saplings. The Delhi government has asked all agencies in the city to conduct an audit of saplings and trees planted by them in the past years.

The government has also asked the authorities to review the and check the status of target set by the various agencies to plant 10 lakh saplings this year.

Environment and Forest Minister Imran Hussain said, "So far the agencies have informed that they have completed plantation of 8.4 lakh saplings. All the agencies assured that they will meet the deadline of achieving the target allocated to them for the current year."

Among the agencies responsible for increase the green cover and planting sapling ever year in the national capital include, the Forest Department, Municipal corporations, NDMC, DDA, DSIIDC, PWD, Development Department, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, and Parks and Gardens Society.

"Given the genuine concerns about levels of air pollution in Delhi, natural greenery will play an important role in mitigating the adverse impact of pollution. He also stressed that tree plantation plays an important role in controlling air pollution," said Hussain.

He added that the that all agencies have been asked to ensure survival and maintenance of plantations, they have also been directed to conduct an early independent audit of plantation by a third party.

"NDMC has informed us that there was a 60% survival rate of saplings in the previous year, the audit reports of Forest Department suggest a survival rate of 70% from 2010-11 to 2013-14," said Hussain.

He added that other agencies have also been asked to conduct third party audit of previous year plantations within a month and submit a report in this regard.
