The Capital has received little respite from ‘severe’ levels of air pollution despite the air quality having slightly improved over the past two days from ‘severe’ to the ‘very poor’ category. While the early morning hours see visibility reduced to about 500 meters, it increases as the day progresses.

The  air quality index (AQI) of Delhi on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) was recorded at 363 units on Thursday. The permissible standards of AQI are between 51 — 100 units.

Scientists working with the CPCB said that the better air quality can be attributed to the improvement in meteorological conditions.

“The wind speed at the ground level which had remained stagnant has picked up over the past three days resulting in the disbursal of pollutants hung in the air. Also, there is sunshine which clears pollutants suspended in the air,” said Vivek Chattopadhyaya,  senior scientist, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).
