Minutes after the terrorist attack on Amarnath Yatra pilgrims on Monday evening, immediate measures were put in place by the Delhi Police. The stepping up of vigilance in the Capital was followed by thorough scanning at inter-state bus terminals, railway stations, and border areas. Security at major religious installations, Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) and Delhi Metro was also increased significantly.

As many as seven pilgrims, six of them women, were killed and at least 19 people were injured after terrorists opened fire on a bus that was returning from the holy shrine, in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. The Amarnath is located in a narrow gorge at the end of a valley nearly 50 km from Pahalgam.

Taking necessary precautions, the Delhi Police have ensured additional security for the movement of Kanwariyas, who are expected to begin their journey this week. It will go on till July 21. A senior police officer told DNA that keeping in mind the high intensity of threat and vulnerability, Quick Response Teams (QRTs) will be deployed, a strict watch will be kept on the Kanwariyas, and their routes will be monitored throughout.

"Security at temples, shrines and other installations of religious importance has been stepped up. All necessary precautions to deal with any untoward situation have been taken and our anti-terror squad personnel have been deployed to maintain a hawk-eye vigil in markets and other crowded areas. Checking of vehicles at borders has also been strengthened and pickets have been raised," a senior Delhi Police officer said.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which handles security at the IGIA, has urged the passengers to reach the airport early as baggage checking and passenger frisking will take longer."Passengers can randomly be asked to cooperate for detailed search of their baggage and personal frisking. They can be asked to remove shoes or belts. So, passengers are requested to arrive for their departure with extra time in hand and cooperate with our personnel,"a senior CISF officer said.

CISF has also deployed armed personnel in plain clothes at the terminal buildings to keep a watch on any suspicious movement and respond without delay, whenever required. The Airlines have also been asked to carry out secondary ladder point checks thoroughly.

The officer further said that temples, dargahs, and other religious places are also under surveillance.

The officer added that anti sabotage checks and repeated sanitising of Delhi Metro stations by dog squads is also being done. QRTs have been deployed and areas in the vicinity of Metro stations are being watched.
