A day after witnessing an 'unusual improvement' in the conditions, Delhi woke up to a hazy morning on Monday, with monitoring stations recording air quality in the "very poor" category, officials said. The overall air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 336 — in the "very poor" category, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Anand Vihar recorded 'severe' air quality. The AQI in 23 areas was registered in the "very poor" category, while the situation was "poor" in 12 areas. The level of PM2.5 (particles in the air with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres) was recorded at 179, and the PM10 level was recorded at 338. In the NCR region, Ghaziabad recorded the worst air quality with an AQI of 398. Greater Noida and Noida's air quality was registered in the "very poor" category. Faridabad and Gurgaon recorded moderate air quality, according to CPCB data.

According to experts, pollution levels have increased due to Western disturbance that is approaching Jammu and Kashmir and hence affecting wind direction as well its speed. "Easterly winds will continue till mid-week, with their speed too touching not more than 10km/hour," an official said, warning that low speed will not clear the pollutants. "Hence, the air quality is likely to remain in very poor category for the next few days," he added. Morning and evening are expected to be hazy due to thick cover of pollutants.

With no let up in the pollution crisis, doctors have advised to avoid strenuous physical activity and curtail morning walks to avoid getting sick. "One should consume fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables and increase intake of water. Avoid stepping out during early morning and dusk hours as it may cause breathlessness or chest congestion," said Dr Mayank Jain, general practitioner in Punjabi Bagh.
