Delhi's air quality turned severe for the first time this season on Tuesday, turning the already grim situation alarming. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded the Air Quality Index as 401 which falls under the severe category. A senior member of The Supreme Court appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority said on Tuesday that private vehicles may not be plied in Delhi roads any more if the pollution levels continue to rise unabated.

The pollution level spiked due to sharp jump in particulate matter(PM) on Monday night. Some parts of Delhi like Anand Vihar, Dwarka Sector 8 even touched 469 AQI on Tuesday, in sudden surge of pollution.

Toxic smog has enveloped Delhi and its national capital region, settling into a haze that is full of hazardous pollutants like PM 2.5 and PM 10. Farm fires in Punjab and Haryana, low wind speed and impending winter has led to the thick blanket of smog cover the city. The situation is expected to worsen on and after November 7 when fireworks are burst to celebrate Diwali, although the apex court has already stepped in to curb it by asking traders to sell green crackers only.

Meanwhile, Air quality research and forecasting agency SAFAR said on Tuesday that a western disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region from Wednesday. This will affect Delhi-NCR's air quality due to the extra incursion of moisture. The moisture holds up coarser PM10 particles.

SAFAR said that the early effects of the western disturbance is evident in the form of deteriorating visibility. However, there was a silver lining in terms of winds. Upper winds were moderate and SAFAR said that this was lower the impact of long range transport of dust and stubble burning smoke.
