An aspirant seeking admission in Radio and Television journalism course at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) alleged discrimination during the interview took place at its Delhi branch on Thursday.

Narrating his 'disturbing' experience, the Muslim-OBC candidate, who is a former Delhi University student, wrote a lengthy post on Facebook that went viral on Friday.

According to the aspirant, who doesn't want to be named, as soon as his interview began, the panelists had questioned him, "How can a Muslims be OBC?". He alleged that he was asked if he had any documents to prove it.

Shocked by the unexpected questions, the 23-year-old initially tried to convince the panelists saying, "There are some castes in Muslims which fall under that category," and later handed over them his OBC certificate.

"Almost all central and state Universities have separate quota for Muslim OBC. I have got admission under this Category in DU," he said.

The institute, however, denied the allegations saying, "There is no space of any caste, class, or religion-based discrimination here."

"We, at IIMC, treat everyone equally, irrespective of their caste, class, or religion. And if the aspirant has any such complaint against the panelists he should inform us. We will definitely look into the matter and take appropriate action," Director General, IIMC, KG Suresh said while speaking to DNA.

The candidate also alleged that the panelists also tried to intimidate him by randomly making a call in the middle of the interview. "One of the panelists apparently called the SDM of my locality in a bid to check the authenticity of my certificate," he said.

Other students who appeared in the interviews that took place at IIMC in the last two days, also complained of being asked 'inappropriate' questions by the panelists. "Most of the questions they asked were about my opinions on reservation," said another OBC aspirant who appeared in an interview for the same course.
