Kiran Bedi's entrance to politics and then BJP decalring her as the chief ministerial candidate has been seen as a master-stroke by political experts so far. Whether it proves to be a fruitful step in the end or not, it surely is interesting to see how the voters of the national capital are reacting to this decision. Chandni Chowk assembly seat largely seen as a Congress stronghold, may also see the winds of change this assembly elections.

Many people especially women in the area feel that by fielding Kiran Bedi, BJP has picked up women’s safety issue as the primary one which will certainly help them in the election. Others believe that Congress will still be able to retain Chandni Chowk seat along with Matia Mahal, and Ballimaran where Muslims account for over 40 percent of the population. This brings them into a strong decision-making position capable of shifting a party’s chances of winning.

According to a survey by Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Chandni Chowk, Matia Mahal, Ballimaran are the three assembly seats for Vidhan Sabha where the BJP could not win both in 2008 as well as 2013 elections. In Chandni Chowk especially in areas like Matia Mahal and Ballimaran, many people have moved out and even got their votes shifted. Today most people who work here as shop owners are no more residents of Chandni Chowk.

Most of the crucial issues faced by Chandni Chowk residents remain untouched. Even with Congress having a strong hold, the face of the walled city has barely seen a difference over the years. Development issues such as schools for children, hospitals, sewer lines, over-head live wires, illegal construction and sanitation remain prime issues for the people of the constituency.
