Starting April 1, high-definition, face recognition cameras will replace the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at hand baggage stamping counter at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). The CISF, which takes care of the airport security, took the decision to speed up the check-in process.

The plan, which has been pending for a long time due to security concerns, has already been implemented at six other airports, including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Cochin, and Kolkata. Senior officers said both terminals have undergone an overhaul to make the new system work. All dark and grey zones identified at the domestic and international terminals have been covered with face detection and high definition motion cameras.

"Along with installation of adequate number of new CCTV cameras, those already installed at domestic and international terminals have been refocused or repositioned for better surveillance. Unlike earlier, 100 per cent power backup has been ensured. Apart from that, length of the output roller of X-ray scanner in check-in areas has been increased to avoid overcrowding," a senior officer said.

Officials said the initiative will help the force save time as well as manpower, which can be better utilised for passenger profiling. The new system will be applicable on both domestic and international travellers.

Meanwhile, the practise of stamping of baggage tags will also be done away with, starting April 1.

In December last year, the CISF had started trial runs to do away with stamping of baggage tags, but the practise was resumed after a week due to security concerns. Then in February this year, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security again announced that the stamping will be done away with, but at the time, the force objected to the immediate implementation of the plan, stating that certain security-related changes were required. Following this, a joint meeting was held to chalk out the plan.

Announcing the plan, CISF DG OP Singh said: "The present system of stamping of hand baggage tags at pre-embarkation security checkpoints at 7 airports shall be dispensed away, with effect from April 1, 2017." The DG said the step would enhance the passenger experience and will ensure hassle-free security environment at airports.

"Appropriate measures have been taken to upgrade the security system to adopt the new system for convenience of passengers. The system will speed up the security check procedures and give more time to CISF personnel to check suspected baggage," Singh said.
