Around 300 home buyers, who had bought apartments in Jaypee Group's Wish Town project in Noida, Sector 128, staged a sit-in at the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Greater Noida's Surajpur on Saturday. The protesters demanded registration of an FIR against the builders for the inordinate delay in giving possession of the flats.

Meanwhile, Gautam Budh Nagar SSP Dharmendra Singh had called a meeting of builders and the home buyers at the Surajpur SSP's office. After the meeting, Singh said the builders have orally committed to commence the construction within a month.

The group had started booking the flats in the Jaypee Wish Town housing societies as early as 2007, the buyers claimed. The ambitious project had been started during the regime of former Chief Minister Mayawati.

Holding placards in their hands, the home buyers marched into the SSP's office. "From 2007 to 2012, Jaypee sold almost all of the 35,000 flats it developed in Wish Town. We were promised possession within the next three years, but only a handful of people with vested interests received the flats. We have no clout over the Jaypee Group, so now we have been left without money or flat," said SS Roy, who had invested his entire life savings into the house.

"I have paid 90 per cent of the entire cost to Jaypee Builders, which is a bunch of thugs. The group has denied us a home for the last seven years. We have been protesting for the last two years but this has had no effect on the builders. Now, we want an FIR to be lodged against them on charges of cheating, dishonesty, and fraud. We want to send them behind the bars for cheating thousands of buyers," he said.

The Wish Town buyers had lodged over 500 complaints against the builders in August 2016. In an effort to resolve the long-pending issue, SSP Singh organised a meeting of builders and home buyers in Surajpur. "We met the buyers this morning and then spoke to the Jaypee management. They have assured us that the construction will begin within a month. We are also ready to be a part of the next builder-buyer interaction," Singh said.

The meeting extended till late afternoon, after which the police assured the buyers that they won't be cheated. "We assured them that we will begin negotiations with the builders and the buyers on Monday. If the builders do not agree to hand over the possession of flats, we will take legal action against them," Noida Superintendent of Police Dinesh Yadav said.

Despite repeated attempts, the Jaypee Builders could not be contacted for comments.
