In an attempt to further implicate a business rival, an accused in the Jamia Nagar rape case, a 36-year-old graphic designer plotted to kill the rape victim. However, on noticing that she was pregnant, he shot at her 51-year-old mother, police said on Friday.

Hussain, along with two accomplices — Mohammad Iqbal, 46, and Wasim, 30 shot at the woman on December 23 in the Jamia Nagar area. He had procured a country-made pistol and the duo taught him how to shoot in a nearby jungle. All three were arrested on Friday, while the rape accused, Sadiq, was nabbed a day after the shooting.

Hussain hatched the conspiracy to falsely implicate Sadiq, already accused of rape, in a murder case. Sadiq's interrogation led the police to Hussain, his rival in real estate deals. The mother was shot in her back on December 23, when she was out for a walk with her daughter, the rape victim.

"The motorcycle and the weapon used were recovered, along with the cartridges. Sadiq was apprehended from his relatives' home in Bijnor. Strict vigil was kept on Hussain, Iqbal and Wasim. The trio maintained a low profile and their relatives could not justify their absence from the area. On Thursday, Iqbal and Wasim were arrested, who revealed that Hussain was the mastermind," said DCP (south-east) Romil Baaniya. Technical surveillance revealed that the trio had been meeting at a specific location for last three weeks. They also visited Tauba Colony quite often. Iqbal worked as a driver with a Jamia-based senior political party leader.
