A piece of burnt food forced a British Airways plane to make an emergency landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Sunday, after the smoke emanating from the food alarmed the passengers, leading to chaos onboard. The flight made a safe landing and no one was injured.

Passengers of flight BA143, which departed from London on March 18 and arrived in Delhi on March 19, spotted dense smoke near the pantry area. The terrified passengers thought the plane was on fire and alerted the crew, which conveyed the information to the pilots. The pilots then informed the air traffic control and requested priority landing.

"Emergency was declared onboard BA 143 and all the possible arrangements, including fire tenders and ambulances, were made to tackle any untoward situation. The flight was given clearance and it landed safely, with all the passengers and crew members safe," an airport officer said.

After all the passengers left the aircraft and it was moved to a secluded bay for inspection, it was revealed that some food had burned inside an oven in the pantry.

Commenting on the incident, the airline's spokesperson said, "The aircraft landed normally after our highly-trained cabin crew dealt with the burnt food in an onboard oven. Crew reassured the customers that there was no danger to the aircraft."
