Were Burari deaths a case of mass murder or mass suicide? A day after the ghastly crime was unearthed, the mystery is far from being solved. The post-mortem of the victims was carried out at the Maulana Aazad Hospital revealed some disturbing facts.

According to Alok Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police, ‘autopsies of six persons -- Bhavnesh, Pratibha, Dhruv, Shivam, Teena and Lalit has revealed so far that they died of hanging and not strangulation.’

The ‘ligature hanging’, however, does not clarify the nature of the crime. But, the fact that there was no sign of struggle or scuffle on the bodies hints at suicide in unison.

The suicide past theory is based on the notes recovered from the house. Some of the notes stated that "one will not die" but attain something "great", an officer said.

‘It appears that the family was involved in occult practices to attain salvation & probably there was a 'tantric' behind this. The eldest member of the family might have been influenced and so all the others followed,’ psychiatrist S Tandon was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Eight mobile phones were found in the drawer of their pooja room with tapes on them. So was jewellery and some cash. Gold jewellery on the bodies of the women were found intact. A family member who lives elsewhere, however, alleged it was a case of murder.

Most bodies were found blindfolded — their mouth taped shut and hands and legs tied.  The first such incident in the city attracted large crowds of shocked and curious people, and had the police scrambling to probe all possible angles — including suicide and murder. Investigators are questioning neighbours and looking for CCTV footage for leads. A case of murder has been registered.

The dead were identified as Narayan Devi (77 ), her two sons Bhavnesh (50) and Lalit (45), her daughters-in-law Savita (48) and Teena (42 ), daughter Pratibha (57 ), grandchildren Priyanka (33), Nitu (25), Monu (23), Dhruv (15) and Shivam (15).
