The narrow lanes of Burari's Sant Nagar continued to be engulfed in shock and fear on Monday, a day after 11 people of a family were found dead at their house in the locality. Even as the police investigation revealed some "religious or mystical practice" behind the deaths, the locals and relatives of the deceased Bhatia family have rejected the claims.

According to locals, the Bhatias were very religious people and used to pray twice or sometimes thrice.

"All of them used to perform puja every night after work. But it's impossible to believe that such a religious and intelligent family can even think of committing mass suicide," said Kuldeep Singh, a local.

The crowd continued to gather around the Bhatia house throughout the day even as heavy security was deployed in the entire area. "Following religion is fine but how can an entire family kill itself for the sake of it. It's just unbelievable," said another local.

Officials of the Delhi Police on Monday said that they were identifying some 'godman' who was allegedly in touch of the family. However, the relatives of the deceased have rejected the claims and accused the police of trying to "hush up" the matter. "Someone killed them and all the reports on the spiritual angle are bogus. This family was a happy and peace-loving one who never believed in 'babas'," said Sujata Bhatia, daughter of Narayani Devi's daughter.

Narayani Devi was the eldest in the Bhatia family. She was found dead with her two sons, daughter, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren, including two minors. Ten bodies were found hanging from the ceiling. However, Devi was lying on the floor in an adjacent room. All of them were blindfolded and their mouths were taped shut. The family was originally from Rajasthan. They used to run a grocery shop and plywood business in the locality for the past 26 years.
